On every further level, three rates compete for the partner above: their level rate, their partner group and matching commission rules. The higher priority wins. By default that is the rules, and that can get expensive.
Level rate: priority 10
Adjustable in the add-on plugin. With 10 it applies wherever neither a group nor a rule matches.
Partner group: priority 50
If the partner on that level has an active partner group, its rate competes.
Commission rules: 100 to 500
Rules for customers, products, categories and dynamic product groups take precedence by default.
The example
One rule for running shoes, five levels
A running shoe shop pays 8 percent on the running shoes category, through a commission rule with priority 200 for all partners. A customer of the coach Clara buys running shoes for €120 and socks for €30 net. Clara has 5 percent, the levels above have the defaults of 3, 2, 1 and 1 percent. The level rates have priority 10 by default.

Socks €30

The rule has a higher priority than every level rate and therefore applies on all five levels. On the running shoes the shop pays 8 percent five times.
Put the level rate before the rules
Set Priority of rates for levels 2 to 5 to 1000 and the level rate wins on the further levels. The first level stays untouched: Clara still gets 8 percent on the running shoes.

How the plugin decides
The order on levels 2 to 5
For every further level, the affiliate program calculates as if the partner above had referred the order themselves, only with their level rate instead of their own rate.
Candidates: the level rate with the priority from the add-on plugin, the partner's active partner group with its priority and every commission rule that matches the order and the partner.
Priority first: in the two "priority first" modes under Commission selection, the higher priority wins per product, on a tie the higher or lower rate.
Always highest or lowest rate: in these modes only the calculated commission decides. Then even a very high priority gives the level rate no precedence.
Commission rules off: if Enable commission rules is off, the level rate applies on every further level.
How to set it up
In the add-on plugin
The priority applies to the level rates of all partners.
Where to find them in the configuration of the multi-level marketing add-on plugin (Extensions → My extensions → Configure):
Commission priority card → Priority of rates for levels 2 to 5The higher number wins. Default 10: partner groups (50) and commission rules (100 to 500) come first, the level rate applies wherever neither of them does. Only counts with "Priority first" under "Commission selection" in the partner program.

Commission priority
What the priority does If several rates match an order, the priority decides which one applies: the higher number wins. On levels 2 to 5 the level rate, the partner group of the partner above (priority 50) and matching commission rules (usually 100 to 500) compete for that partner. The default 10 places the level rates below them. Partner groups and rules agreed on purpose come first, and the level rate applies wherever neither of them does. A higher value gives the level rates precedence, on equal priority the tie setting decides. The rate of the first level stays untouched, stored bookings are not recalculated.
Note: only with "Priority first" The priority only counts if one of the two "Priority first" modes is selected under "Commission selection" in the partner program, as by default. With "Always highest rate" and "Always lowest rate" only the higher or lower calculated commission decides. Then even a very high priority gives the level rate no precedence.

Level settings
Here you can define the maximum level for a commission of an order. Depending on the level, up to five partners receive a commission per order. Level 1 are only orders from directly recruited customers and only the direct partner receives a commission. Level 5 are orders generated through four other partners and for which a total of five partners receive a commission. Please note that a change does not affect orders that are already eligible for commission. A change will only affect future orders and commissions.

Manage customer, product, category and dynamic product group rates in commission rules with selections, priority and partner assignments. A customer or product match is sufficient. Existing bookings remain unchanged.
Only active commission rules valid for the partner are eligible. Customers, products, categories and dynamic product groups within a rule are combined with OR: One match is sufficient. The type of match does not give a rule precedence – for example, a customer rule is not more important than a product rule.
The following option only applies to Always highest rate and Always lowest rate. When checked, the individual partner rate is compared alongside matching rules. It can therefore win itself, for example as the lowest rate. When unchecked, only matching rules are compared.

Common questions
Why does level 2 get as much as level 1?
Because a commission rule with a higher priority than the level rate matches all partners. Then its rate applies on every level. The fix: raise the priority of the level rates above that of the rules, or limit the rule to selected partners.
Does the priority also change the commission of the first level?
No. The priority of the add-on plugin only applies to the level rates from level 2. The affiliate program calculates the first level as always.
Which priority do partner groups have?
The one you set at the group; the bundled example groups have 50. With the default of 10 for the level rates, an active partner group takes precedence.
Does a maximum commission also apply to the further levels?
No. Minimum order value and maximum commission per order only limit the first level.
Are commissions already booked recalculated when I change the priority?
No. Every order is booked once per level; changes apply to future bookings.
